WEST VILLAGE TOWNHOME MANHATTAN New York
A calming respite for a young family in Manhattan’s West Village — paying homage to their historic 1860s brownstone through warm textures, timelessly classic materials, and details that find refinement through the patina of living. Within the 1,600 square foot, three-story brownstone we were guided by European finishings and classic Belgian interiors, finding richness through a balance of natural materiality and embracing a harmonic moodiness.
The Process:
Immersing ourselves in the brownstone’s gut renovation, we worked closely with the client to cultivate a space that aligned with their vision and lifestyle. Seeking to add intentional texture and invite a calming cohesion, we integrated layers of natural materials, including raw & antique woods, earthy-hued heavy Belgian linens, antique brass detailing, and wall texture from Roman Clay. Special pieces, including antique stone fireplaces, were sourced from Europe to add further dimension. We also explored solutions that paired classic design and mindful functionality—like a custom panel finished in Roman Clay to conceal electronics, offering tasteful solutions without compromising the holistic design.
BARROW ST. TOWNHOME VAN VORST PARK Jersey City
The Barrow Street brownstone is a classic 1850s Victorian brownstone in Jersey City’s Van Vorst Park. With many of its beautiful, original details left intact—including crown molding, stained glass windows, and a unique wooden grand staircase—And Studio’s vision was to preserve and amplify the space’s character while layering in modern functionality, depth, and warmth.
Inspired by the tactile utility of London townhouses, we sought out to create a home that felt wholly authentic, a balance of nuanced detail and open space.
We began by elevating many of the home’s original details, adding natural oak herringbone flooring; selectively repairing crown molding to match the original 1850s plaster; finishing the walls with beautifully textured diamond plaster in collaboration with Jersey Ice Cream Co.
We transformed the kitchen, re-envisioning the layout with a more functional, intuitive flow and renovating it in a classic English style, including both Shaker details and custom carpentry handcrafted in England. Details throughout the home nod to its historic past, including William Morris wallpaper in the guest bedroom, unfinished brass fixtures, and a one-of-a-kind antique stone basin in the powder room... special touches that felt subtly untouched by time.
